School Shopping No Spending Spree

Shiny new shoes, No. 2 pencils, a snappy lunchbox: Back-to-school shopping was once a welcomed ritual. No more. Big prices and small budgets have turned the once pleasant annual purchasing party into an allegory of a flagging economy, producing parental angst and industry cheerleaders who urge the moms and dads to at least "buy American." ... On average, American parents spend from $545 to $671 per child

In Praise of Imperfection

...We live today in an age which seems to require perfection. Our hair must be perfectly styled, glossy and controlled. Our teeth must be perfectly white, and of course perfectly straight. Our (women’s) bodies must be a perfect size 0, the clothes we wear must be, if not haute couture, then either high-end fashion or so unattractive and ill-fitting as to be seen as stylish. Our homes must be perfect palaces, spacious and impressive, furnished with gleaming marble countertops, brushed stainless kitchen appliances, enormous flat screen televisions in the home theater, and additional domestic perfection throughout the rest of the...

Summer Auctions

Even as we speak, I have an agent bidding for me at a local auction house for some exciting items. Well, exciting to me, anyway. And to Agent Mom, as well. The problem with summer auctions, especially in our little slice of heaven here in New England, is that we are a summer resort community. Now, don’t get me wrong. I love the fact that people from far away come here just to spend time in our beautiful community. And they not only spend time, they spend money. Which is good for the community, allowing it to thrive. This is...

Best-Kept Secrets

A while back, I mentioned a secret place where true treasures can occasionally be found. Maybe this is the time to clue you all in on this place (and places like it). Most people have stuff they’d like to get rid of. And not everyone has access to a Good Will or Salvation Army drop box. And while most churches still do run thrift shops, they can be a pain about the merchandise they’ll accept as donations. But our town, here in our little slice of heaven in New England, has a dump. Only we call it a “transfer station”...

Briton held for wearing a bikini in Dubai shopping mall after fight with Arabic woman

A British holidaymaker has been charged with indecency in Dubai after walking through the world's largest shopping centre in a bikini. The woman was buying clothes and gifts in the Dubai Mall, fully dressed but in a low-cut top, when she was accosted by an Arabic woman and criticised for wearing 'revealing clothing'. The pair then became embroiled in a heated row in front of hundreds of bemused shoppers. Incensed by the Arabic woman's comments, the British woman told her to 'mind her own business' before stripping out of her clothes and 'taunting' the locals by walking around in only...

Hell hath no fury: 'Rage cage' opens in Chinese shopping mall for women to vent their frustration

We have all wanted to break things out of sheer frustration - especially on a Monday. Now women in China have a special place they can go to do just that. A shopping mall in Shenyang has opened a special store for people to break all kinds of normal household things - smashing them to smithereens with baseball bats. Even writing it feels a bit satisfying - proof that the store should succeed in its aim, which is to relieve pressure and lift bad moods. But beware, there are no men allowed - this is a women-only zone. The store...

EU to ban selling eggs by the dozen

British shoppers are to be banned from buying eggs by the dozen under new regulations approved by the European Parliament. For the first time, eggs and other products such as oranges and bread rolls will be sold by weight instead of by the number contained in a packet. Until now, Britain has been exempt from EU regulations that forbid the selling of goods by number. But last week MEPs voted to end Britain’s deal despite objections from UK members. The new rules will mean that instead of packaging telling shoppers a box contains six eggs, it will show the weight...

How to Buy a Used Car

- The Art of Manliness - http://artofmanliness.com - How to Buy a Used CarPosted By Brett On April 11, 2010 @ 11:53 pm In Manly Skills | 57 CommentsShare [2] Last year, my wife and I were eating dinner when we suddenly heard a crash outside. We ran out the door and saw that someone had smashed into our car, which had been parked on the street. The lady driving the other car was drunk and driving on the wrong side of the road. The lush and her car were completely unscathed, but our car was totaled. Doesn’t it always...

Around the world, how far can you get with $10?

If you're in New York City with only $10 in your pocket, Julio Ortiz-Teissonniere has you covered. Get an unlimited day pass MetroCard, he says. "It'll take you from the Bronx Zoo down to Coney Island and everywhere else in between for just $8.25.
